Pick a Project!

Sometimes the biggest barrier to getting started is choosing what you want to paint. So here are some suggestions for projects that you might enjoy depending on the time and creativity you’re working with.

I’ve split the projects up into 7 categories, and there’s a little description under each heading with info about the tutorials included there.

Hopefully the next time you dont know what to paint, this page will give you some ideas!

Happy painting!

First Steps

If you’ve never used gouache before, these tutorials are the perfect place to begin! They all contain a nice mixture of techniques to help you become familiar with gouaches quirky ways.

Small & Quick

These tutorials are the quickest ones out of the lot. For some of them, they’re speedy because they’re small, whereas others are quick videos that encourage you to do your own thing. Pick one of these projects when you only have time for a speedy painting session.

Follow Along

These tutorials are a great place to start if you’re new to gouache. These tutorials walk you through all the steps and don't require you to make lots of creative decisions.

Details & Patience

If you love to paint details or have an afternoon free to paint, these meaty projects are a great choice! They’re not necessarily more advanced, but they all have brushwork that requires a little more time to complete these stunning scenes.

Realistic

If you’re interested in developing your gouache skills to paint realistic landscapes, these projects are the perfect choice! In these projects we’ll focus on capturing realistic textures and natural colors, to paint landscapes that look like little photos stuck in our sketchbooks.

A Bit of Creative Freedom

These tutorials will allow you to branch out a little and make some creative choices. They’re a great option for when you don't want to follow a tutorial exactly.

Best on Cotton Paper

These tutorials were all painted on cold-pressed cotton paper, which helps us to get those nice soft blending effects; so grab the right paper for the job for the best results with these.
